During sexual arousal, the arteries in the penis relax and widen. This allows more blood flow into the erectile tissues. There is a release of nitric oxide by nerve endings in the corpus cavernosum and the formation of cyclic GMP, which produces smooth muscle relaxation in the corpora cavernosa. These arteries expand and then harden. The veins carry blood away from the penis became compressed and thus restricting the blood flow out of the penis.
